About the Town
Bapsfontein sits about 16 km northeast of Kempton Park, roughly equidistant between Benoni, Bronkhorstspruit, and the eastern suburbs of Pretoria. It is not a town in the formal sense. It is a collection of smallholdings, small farms, and residential plots that have grown into a recognised community without growing into a conventional suburb. The area falls within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and is part of the Elandsvlei Conservancy, which protects the Highveld grasslands and wetland pans that define the landscape here.
The draw for visitors is low-key and genuine. There are antique dealers and collectables shops, including a long-running market at the Tweefontein Shopping Centre. The surrounding grassland and pans are on the International Bird Route, and the wetland areas around Elandsvlei, also known as Dickin's Pan, attract serious birders. Species found here include marsh owl, African grass-owl, African fish eagle, and black-shouldered kite. The pans are on private land so access needs prior arrangement with local bird clubs, but the approach roads alone are worth the trip.
The Nest Park section of Bapsfontein is made up of around 255 small farms and has the feel of an active village. Annual potjiekos competitions, garden walks, and community events keep residents connected. It is the kind of place where people know their neighbours and the pace of life is deliberately slow without being entirely off the map.
For anyone passing through on a road trip between Johannesburg and Bronkhorstspruit, Bapsfontein is worth a detour. The antiques and markets are scattered rather than concentrated, but the rural Highveld atmosphere, the birdlife, and the genuine small-community character make it more interesting than it looks on a map.
