About the Town

Bray sits in the Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality, roughly 80 km west of Vryburg on roads that flatten out into open bushveld as you push toward the Botswana border. The Molopo River, which forms the boundary between South Africa and Botswana, runs close enough to the town that the two Brays, one on each side, share more in common with each other than either does with the nearest city. The landscape is semi-arid Kalahari fringe, red sand, scattered thorn trees, and a horizon that sits far away in all directions.

The economy here is cattle and maize farming, the same as it has been for generations. The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District this far out is remote by any measure. Vryburg, the regional centre, is the nearest town with a hospital, a proper fuel station, and a wider range of shops. Bray itself is a small service stop for the surrounding farms and for cross-border traffic moving between South Africa and Botswana at this quieter, less-used crossing point.

The appeal is what you would expect from a town on the edge of the Kalahari. The skies are enormous and dark at night. Birdlife along the Molopo River corridor is good for anyone willing to slow down. The surrounding farmland holds a mix of game including kudu, gemsbok, and springbok that have drifted down from the Botswana side over the years. There are no formal wildlife operations in the village itself, but the surrounding farms run hunting and some photographic game.

This is not a destination you arrive at by accident. You come through Bray on purpose, usually because you know someone here, you are crossing into Botswana, or you are following the Kalahari fringe on a longer overland route. It is honest, far out, and worth knowing about if you are building a picture of just how remote parts of the North West actually get.

Do you know this town better than I do?

If you live here, grew up here, or spent real time here, I want to hear from you. A photo, a correction, a story, a tip. Anything that makes this page more honest is welcome.
