About the Town
Calvinia was founded in 1845 on the farm Hoogekraal after the Dutch Reformed Church bought land to serve the scattered farming families of the Hantam. The town was renamed Calvinia after the Protestant reformer John Calvin when its first minister arrived in 1851. The name Hantam itself comes from a Khoisan word referring to the red bulb plants that cover the plains here, and those bulbs are still the reason most people come. The Khoisan were the first people of this land, followed by Dutch-descended pastoralists who brought sheep into the area in the 1760s.
Calvinia is the largest town on the Hantam Plateau and the administrative hub for a vast region. It has around 9,700 residents and provides services for farms spread across hundreds of kilometres. The Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, a few kilometres north of town, offers dramatic hiking through a ravine with San rock art, springs, and fynbos. The reserve is compact but impressive, with overnight trails and abseiling for those who want more than a day walk.
The town itself has the expected Karoo character: a Dutch Reformed church dominating the main street, a good museum (the Hantam Huis), wide streets, and the particular silence that comes from being genuinely far from everywhere. The wildflower season runs from August to October, and when conditions are right, the plains around Calvinia are covered in orange and yellow daisies. It draws visitors every year and for good reason.
From Calvinia you can reach Nieuwoudtville to the northwest, Sutherland to the southeast via the R356, and Williston to the northeast. The R355 south over the Gannaga Pass to the Tankwa Karoo National Park is one of the great Karoo drives, even if it takes a while on gravel.
