About the Town

Chrissiesmeer, named for Christina Pretorius, sits on the northern bank of Lake Chrissie, the largest natural freshwater lake in South Africa. The area was first settled in 1867 by Scottish immigrants who called it New Scotland, and the San and Tlou-tle people lived here long before them. The town itself is small, slow, and easy to underestimate. That's usually the sign you're in the right place.

The draw is the lake district. More than 270 lakes and pans surround the town, and from September to March the larger lakes fill with birds. Over 287 species have been recorded here, and the flamingo flocks can run to 20,000 at a time. This is serious birding country, not the kind with a gift shop and a hide, but open grassland and water in every direction.

Beyond the birds, the area rewards slow travel. Fishing, canoeing, horse trekking, and mountain biking all operate at a pace that matches the landscape. The annual Frog Hunt is genuinely strange and genuinely local. Gin tasting at The Gin Shop in town is worth the stop. The Dumbarton Oaks Hotel, built in the late 1800s, is still standing and still atmospheric. Day trips reach Barberton's UNESCO-listed Makhonjwa Mountains in under two hours.

The character of Chrissiesmeer is rural Mpumalanga without the tourist polish. The N17 runs through and most people don't slow down. If you do, you find a town that knows exactly what it is, lake country, open sky, and the kind of quiet that's getting harder to find.
