About the Town
Greyton sits in a bowl at the base of the Sonderend Mountains, about 145 kilometres from Cape Town via Caledon on the N2 and R406. It is a compact village — a main street, a church, a handful of restaurants and accommodation places, and a ring of private houses on quiet streets. The architecture is predominantly 19th-century Cape vernacular: white walls, thatch, small stoeps, oak trees lining the roads.
The Boesmanskloof hiking trail is the single biggest draw for non-residents. The 17-kilometre route cuts through the Sonderend mountain range between Greyton and McGregor via spectacular gorge terrain, waterfalls, and indigenous fynbos. It is a full day's serious hiking in one direction with a car shuttle or an overnight in McGregor. The permit system keeps numbers manageable. It is one of the better day hikes in the Western Cape.
The village has been colonised by weekenders from Cape Town and a steady flow of permanent relocators for the past twenty years. The result is a good restaurant scene, an art gallery or two, and property prices that have moved well above the surrounding Overberg average. The community that existed here before that wave — the Group Areas Act forced Coloured families out of the village in the 1950s, many to a separate section called Heuwelkroon — is still present but layered under the newer arrivals.
Genadendal, 5 kilometres away, has the deeper history. Greyton has the restaurants. Both are worth your time.
