About the Town

Langebaan Lagoon is 16 kilometres long, shallow, turquoise, and almost entirely sheltered from the Atlantic swell. The water temperature is cold by tropical standards but warmer than the open ocean beaches to the south. The reliable wind that comes off the Atlantic every summer afternoon has made Langebaan one of the top kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations in the country. The conditions are consistent from October through March.

The ecological significance of the lagoon is international. It holds Ramsar wetland status and supports roughly 10 percent of the coastal wader bird population in South Africa. Migratory birds arrive from as far as the Arctic. Greater and lesser flamingos are resident year-round and visible from the beachfront without binoculars. The West Coast National Park, which borders the town on three sides, protects the surrounding fynbos and the offshore islands in Saldanha Bay.

The West Coast wildflower season from late July to September is one of the better-known reasons to be on this coastline. The national park flowers in sequence as the season progresses, and in a good year the daisy fields between Langebaan and Postberg are exceptional. The timing varies with rainfall and is worth checking before you commit to a specific week.

The town itself is comfortable, functional, and not overbuilt for a destination with this much going for it. A main street with restaurants and shops, a watersports industry, and a residential area that has grown significantly over the past decade as Cape Town remote workers discovered the R27 is navigable.
