About the Town

Patensie sits in the Gamtoos River Valley in Kouga Local Municipality, Sarah Baartman District, less than an hour east of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on the R331. The name is thought to derive from a Khoikhoi expression meaning 'lêplek van die beeste', roughly 'where the cattle lie'. Citrus farming began here in 1885 when Thomas and Edith Bean planted the first trees in the valley. By 1928 the Bo-Gamtoos Co-operative Company had formed, which became Patensie Citrus, now one of the largest citrus exporters in South Africa. The bright orange of ripe navel oranges and lemons through the valley in season tells you exactly what this place does and does it well.

The town functions as the gateway to the Baviaanskloof Wilderness, a 180,000-hectare mountain catchment area and UNESCO World Heritage Site to the west. Whether you're heading in by 4x4, mountain bike, or foot, Patensie is where you fuel up, get your bearings, and talk to locals about current trail conditions. The Kouga Dam, an unusual double-arch dam built in 1967 and the first of its type engineered in South Africa, is a short drive from town and offers a good picnic spot and a scenic road in.

Cockscomb Mountain dominates the view south of town. There are hiking trails, birdwatching spots, and freshwater fishing on the Gamtoos River and its tributaries. The town has a few guesthouses, a decent hotel with a local pub, some shops, and fuel. It is small and functional without being bleak.

The valley itself is beautiful in a specific way: dense citrus orchards against a backdrop of rugged mountain ranges, the air carrying the faint sweetness of fruit in season. It doesn't perform for tourists. It's a working agricultural town with an extraordinary wilderness on its doorstep.
