Riebeek-Kasteel

One of the oldest towns in South Africa, sitting in the Riebeek Valley 80 kilometres from Cape Town, with the Royal Hotel — the oldest hotel in the country — at its centre. Wine, olives, wheat, and a main street that gets very busy on weekends.

About the Town

In 1661, an expedition led by Pieter Cruythoff climbed a mountain in the interior and named the valley below after VOC Commander Jan van Riebeeck — Riebeeck Kasteel. Farmers moved in, a church was built, the Royal Hotel was established, and by 1900 the town had been formally laid out around those original anchors. The Royal Hotel is still there, still the oldest hotel in South Africa, and still the social hub of Riebeek-Kasteel on a Saturday afternoon.

The Riebeek Valley produces wheat, wine, and increasingly, olives. The wine estates around Riebeek-Kasteel and its sister town Riebeek West to the north sit under the Kasteelberg — a flat-topped sandstone mountain that you can see from almost everywhere in the valley. The Swartland Wine and Olive Route runs through here, and estates like Kloovenburg and Allesverloren have been drawing visitors for years. The olive oil from this valley has a good reputation and is sold throughout the region.

The main street has art galleries, coffee shops, delis, and a cluster of good restaurants that pull a significant Cape Town crowd on weekends. The pace during the week is entirely different — quieter, more village-like, and probably closer to what the place is actually about. The Kasteelberg Hiking Trail goes up to the ridge and back in a few hours and gives a proper view across the Swartland to the sea.

It is busy by small-town standards, but the infrastructure has kept up and the character of the place is intact. The old Victorian and Cape Dutch houses on the main roads are well maintained and give the town a visual coherence that many similar places have lost to development.
