About the Town

Skukuza sits on the southern bank of the Sabie River, about 12 km from the Paul Kruger entrance gate. It is the largest rest camp in Kruger and has served as the park's administrative headquarters since it was formally established in 1936. The name was given by the local Tsonga people to James Stevenson-Hamilton, the park's first warden. It means he who sweeps clean, a reference to his relocation of the Tsonga communities so the park could be proclaimed. That history matters and the park itself documents it.

The southern region around Skukuza is consistently the most productive for game viewing in the entire park. The Sabie River corridor holds large elephant herds, hippo, crocodile, and buffalo year-round. Lion sightings are regular, leopard less predictable but present. The park's overall figures give you a sense of the scale: roughly 1,500 lion, 12,000 elephant, 5,000 rhino, 1,000 leopard, and 2,500 buffalo roam the broader reserve.

Game drives from Skukuza cover both the tar and gravel road network to the east and west of the Sabie River. Guided walks depart from the camp. Sunset river cruises on the Sabie run throughout the season. The camp has restaurants, a filling station, a shop, a car hire desk, and a small museum covering the park's history and its founding warden. It functions more like a small village than a campsite.

Skukuza is not the place for solitude. At peak season it is busy, the camp is large, and you will share the roads with other vehicles. That said, the road networks south toward Crocodile Bridge and north toward Satara put you into prime territory. Dawn and dusk are yours if you are up for them.
