About the Town
Wolmaransstad was laid out in 1888 on the farms Rooderand and Vlakfontein and proclaimed a town in 1891, named after Jacobus M.A. Wolmarans, a member of the Transvaal Republic's Executive Council. It sits on the N12 in what is now the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, the main town of the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality. The N12 is the link between Johannesburg and Kimberley, and Wolmaransstad has always existed in relation to that axis: a waypoint, a service centre, and a place with its own economy that does not depend entirely on passing traffic.
The maize farming here is large-scale and significant. Wolmaransstad lies in the productive southern portion of the North West highveld, and the surrounding plains carry commercial grain operations that feed into the national supply chain. But the more unusual economic story is the diamonds. The area sits in an important alluvial diamond-mining zone, and Wolmaransstad is an active diamond buying centre with a Diamond Exchange where uncut stones are auctioned. Diamond buyers come here from across the country and internationally. The concentration of earth-moving equipment in the surrounding diggings is reportedly the highest in the world, a claim that sounds unlikely until you drive through the countryside and see the scale of the alluvial operations.
The town is the main commercial and administrative centre for the Maquassi Hills area, which includes Lebaleng and Makwassie. Schools, a hospital, and a full range of retail services are available. The N12 Treasure Route passes through, connecting it to the broader network of towns between Johannesburg and George. Stilfontein is roughly 70 km to the east and Christiana is about 90 km to the west, which gives Wolmaransstad a clear position in the N12 corridor context.
What makes Wolmaransstad interesting beyond the surface is the combination of industrial agriculture and alluvial diamond mining in the same town. Both industries are capital-intensive, both operate on the highveld plains, and both have shaped the physical appearance of the countryside. The diamond exchange is the most unusual thing you will find here and it is worth seeing, even briefly, to understand that this is not just another maize town on the N12.
